Bloggers Who Don’t Respond To Comments?

January 17, 2015 Discussions 34

I never thought there would be such a thing as a book blogger who didn’t answer comments left on their own blog. Now I don’t mean that you should have to respond to every comment, if some of the comments are just things like “good job!” or “I liked that book.” or whatever.

But ever since I joined the Discussion Challenge Nicole at Feed Your Fiction Addiction started up, I’ve been finding more book bloggers through the discussion posts. And from checking out their follow lists. Some blogs I may never have found if not for that challenge. And a number of them I’m now following!

However, I noticed that for every few blogs I stumbled across that were answering every comment left on their blogs, I’d find 1-2 that didn’t reply to a single comment left at all.

I get that we can get busy and time runs away from us. Or we’ve had medical issues, or whatnot. But I went back over a month on some of these non-commenting blogs to see if they ever did reply to people. And I never saw any responses. Yet their blog was still getting lots of new comments on the new posts!

It’s just a bit mind-boggling to me I guess. I mean, I love comments! I most likely talk too much when I leave a comment on a blog, as well as sometimes when I reply to comments left on my blog. I’m always excited to see that someone has commented, no matter what the comment is (except spam of course!) So to see a blogger who doesn’t reply to comments at all on their own blog is really strange to me.

Do you respond to comments left on your blog? Do you not respond to comments left on your blog? Does it make you less likely to consider following a blogger if they never respond to comments people leave them?

*glances around innocently* >.> 😉 There are a couple of bigger blogs that I’ve noticed never respond to comments even when I ask a question in my comment D: I guess they’ve decided that it just isn’t worth the time to respond since a lot of people don’t go back to check for replies? I always forget where I have commented, hence why I put in the reply notification for my blog haha

I added a reply notification plugin too. I have a folder in my bookmarks for sites I’ve commented on if I know I may forget to go back and check. But I try to reply to all comments left on my own blog. Just seems like the right thing to do. After all, if I ignore people who comment on my blog, why would they want to keep coming back?

And you totally don’t count! *snugs* You respond when you can, you don’t totally ignore everyone for no apparent reason.

If the larger blogs I follow provide quality content, I’m not so concerned about them answering back to every comment I leave.

However, I have come across a number of smaller blogs that don’t comment back and as a result, I’ve stopped following them. And sure, I get all the reasons you mentioned above for not commenting back, but not a single comment response to me or anyone else, it’s a bit discouraging for someone trying to network.

My commenting system has the option of replying via email which I love. So I don’t have to visit the post to see the comments left by others to respond.

I’m not even trying to actively network, I just like chatting with people. So seeing no comment responses to anyone at all make me not want to follow the blog. Good content is wonderful, but it just makes me think they don’t really care if they can’t even respond to their followers.

When I saw this discussion listed in the January link up for the challenge, my heart sunk a bit. At the moment, I’m having a real hard time responding to comments, both because of work and because of things happening in my life. But then I read this post and I don’t feel so bad. I try to respond to comments at the weekend, when I have more time. So it’s mostly a week or so without responding. A month has only ever happened when I was having a sabbatical from my blog and not going on it at all (and there’s a sticky post mentioning this so people are aware).

I’ve not really known too many blogs who didn’t reply to comments for that long, not unless there were things going on in their life, or they haven’t been posting for that long either. Then there’s a reason. But if you’re regularly posting, but not responding to comments for that long… it seems a bit odd to me. I don’t know why someone wouldn’t reply. I think you can get a really good conversation going if you respond to comments, and people are more likely to come back if there’s a dialogue going on, as it doesn’t just feel one sided. I think responding to comments is pretty necessary. That’s just me though.

Yeah, I was trying to word the actual discussion better than the title of the post. I don’t expect anyone to respond right away, I’m fine if they take a week or even a bit longer. Just so you can see that they do respond to people. It just really puzzled me when I noticed that there were no comment replies on a few of these blogs I found.

Most I hadn’t found directly linked to the January link up. I admit to being nosy and clicking through blogrolls to see what blogs other people follow to see if I’d like to follow them too!

RL gets in the way for everyone, no issues with that stuff at all. It was just these particular blogs were posting reviews and discussions regularly, but not seeming to care if anyone commented on the posts or not. Made me not want to follow them, even though some of the content was stuff I’d normally be interested in. So I thought I’d see what others thought.

This is a good question. I have a really small blog so I tend to answer every comment I get. And I often check back to the blogs/posts where I left a comment to see if the blogger replied. I think that the blogger-reader interaction is one of the best aspects of blogging, so I don’t really understand bloggers who don’t answer their comments at all.
Maybe the “big bloggers” (and I really dislike this expression, but there you have it) can’t reply to every single comment, if they get like 200/week, but then not *all* comments are meaningful enough to be answered. But some are. And I tend not to comment on blogs where the comments always go unanswered.

I bookmark pages I’ve left comments on. Just in case the blog doesn’t have an e-mail response to let the commenter know the blog owner replied. And I check back once a week or so if I think of it. But if I didn’t bookmark, I’d never remember what blog I’d commented on if I wasn’t following it.

Maybe that’s part of the problem? These blogs just assume that most of the comments are from non-followers and so don’t bother to reply, thinking they won’t remember to check? That still seems strange to me though.

As far as ‘big bloggers’ go, I’ve made friends with blog owners who would be considered as such. And they reply to every comment they get. So I just keep coming back to the “they must not care” mindset. Which makes me not want to follow them.

Side note: Yay! Another dragon lover!

I also have a hard time understanding why bloggers bother to invite discussion and then don’t respond to comments. Of course occasional lapses are understandable, but it seems so one-sided if there is never any response. I do wish there were a better way of keeping track and following up…I don’t have the reply notification possibility on my blog.

I totally get if RL has reared it’s ugly head, or you get ill, or something just comes up. But usually that means the blogger drops a note somewhere on the blog, or stops updating for a while, or something. But people who regularly post reviews and discussions, and just never respond to a single comment? That I don’t get at all. Definitely makes me not want to follow them, as it gives off the feeling that they don’t care.

I didn’t know Blogger didn’t have any way of comment reply notifications for people. I had to add a plugin to do it for my site, but I have WordPress. That seems silly that they didn’t make a way to let people know about responses.

  6. Arya D.

I tend to not follow blogs if they don’t respond to at least some of the comments on their blog.If they are medium to smaller blogs I expect the owner of said blog to respond to comments more than I would when the person has 100s of comments on every post. With that being said I have seen bloggers who get a lot of comments and responds to a lot of them.
I might follow a blog that doesn’t respond to comments if I really like the context but I probably won’t ever comment on their posts. I usually try to keep up with all the places I comment on as well but I think a few have fallen through the cracks and haven’t yet found a method to keep all the places I commented on organized.

I made a folder in my bookmarks menu for blog posts I’ve commented on. I try to check back at least weekly if not sooner to see if the comment was answered and/or if I need to respond to it. Otherwise I’d never remember where all I’d commented!

  7. Ana @ Butterflies of the Imagination

I really enjoy it when bloggers reply back to comments because it makes me feel like they care about what I have to say, and I’ll be more likely to keep on coming back to their blogs if they reply. However, I’m pretty lenient because I know how busy life can get and sometimes it’s hard replying back to every comment. It’s just that when bloggers don’t reply back at all, I get a teensy bit disappointed.

I love when people reply to my comments. It makes it feel more like a community of friends, even if I don’t actually know the other person. When the blogger doesn’t respond to anyone however, and it seems to be normal for them to not reply, that’s when I tend to decide not to follow them. RL happens, things come up, I don’t expect responses immediately. But if they don’t respond or have any explanation as to why they aren’t able to respond after a month or more, it just makes me think they don’t care. So in turn, I don’t care enough to go back.

  8. Lola

I always respond to comments on my blog as I feel like that’s a way to thank them for commenting. I even have this handy dandy plugin that reminds me of how many comments I haven’t replied to yet.

I guess I do prefer if a blogger responds to comments and even better if they havesem sort of plugin or commenting system that notifies me of their relies as I am bad at checking back to see if there’s a reply. I know some bloggers give more priority either to replying or commenting back.

Also when I just staretd blogging I never replied to comments, not sure why actually, I staretd as a co-blogger and she never replied to comments and I didn’t got that many comments although they didmake me happy. I am not sure what changed, but at a certain point I started replying and commenting back to every comment. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it and I love discovering new blogs or visiting my favourite bloggers.

I try to not only respond to comments on my blog, but then go comment on the blogs of those who have commented on mine. Though it also depends on how busy my week has been. Sometimes I’ll end up commenting on other blogs all in one day, whatever day I have off that week that I’m actually at home.

But a lot of that is me being a chatty cathy. *grins*

What plugin do you use that tell you about the comments? I’ve been responding within a day (sometimes staying up til 1am) so I don’t forget to do so! Might make me procrastinate on replies to have the plugin, but it would be hugely useful too. I’m always afraid I’ll forget someone.

      • Lola

I think everyone has had those weeks were you are so busy that you can’t get around to doing as commenting as much as you want to. This has been one of those weeks for me :(.

The name of the plugin is Comments Not Replied To:
I sometimes forget to reply to a few comments and once in a while I check this plugin. It shows up in the comment section of your dashboard and creates a not replied to tab.

        • SilvaraWilde

Thanks again for telling us about the plugin! And no worries about how long it takes to get back to people. It’s not like you’re ignoring us, RL just gets in the way sometimes.

I’m really loving this plugin so far, it barely changed how my comment dashboard looks, but makes finding the ones I haven’t replied to yet super easy!

          • Lola

btw I got an e-mail about your reply now :).

The plugin is pretty neat, it’s only a small adjustment, but it’s really helpfull.

          • SilvaraWilde

Yeah, somehow the reply function changed itself from “All replies” to “disabled” I have no idea what happened there. *pokes it with a stick* Glad to know it’s for sure working now though!

The name of the plugin is Comments Not Replied To:
After you install it, it shows up on the comments section on your dashboard with a new column. Another blogger recommended this plugin to me and it’s really helpfull. I usuallu check the comment after I receive an e-mail, but sometimes I miss a comment or forget to reply and then this plugin is very handy.

  9. Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction

I try to respond to pretty much every single comment on my blog (though some do occasionally slip under the radar). I agree that it sort of feels like a blogger isn’t particularly interested in what you’re saying if they don’t respond back. I do give a bit more grace for bigger bloggers, but if I find that they never respond to my comments, I tend to stop commenting. I might even still read their posts, but what’s the point of commenting if they’ve ignored them all? At least that’s how I feel.

Now, I will say that I’ve noticed some bloggers don’t reply to the comments on their own blog, but instead come onto my blog and comment on one of my posts. Especially with Blogger (which doesn’t actually even let people know that you’ve replied), some people find that to be a better way of communicating. So maybe some of the bloggers you’ve seen who don’t respond are doing that?

*laughs* I’ve been known to respond to other commenters on blogs I’ve commented on too!

I haven’t noticed if those bloggers comment on other blogs. I don’t even actually remember which blogs were the ones in question! Once I realized that they didn’t seem to respond to comments, I closed the tab and moved on. Commenting on other blogs is good, but it still would leave your own blog looking less than stellar because of not responding on your own blog. At least to me.

I don’t even particularly care if they respond to me so much as to anyone at all. My comment may have been very similar to someone else’s, so if they skip me but answer the other person I can just read that response. If I remember I’ve commented at all! It just was weird to me that no comments were answered.

  10. Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum

I’m a big believer in replying to comments! I love discussions, not to mention it’s a great way to network. I’m not always so good with replying to comments right away on my own blog these days though, because of a busy schedule. I’m also terrible with replying to comments on posts older than a week but I do try to go back and make sure every comment that needs a response gets one.

At least you try! And the fact that some (if not all) of the comments on your blog are answered, shows you actually care.

Maybe that plugin Lola mentioned will help lots of us remember! As long as she remembers to tell us what it is… *laughs*

  11. Tabitha (Not Yet Read)

You know I see this frequently as well. And honestly yes it does effect whether I decide to follow and visit again because I like interaction! Lately I’ve been very slack about responding to comments on my own blog and instead I’ll just go visit their blog back and comment there instead. This is mostly because I’ve been so short on time and exhausted from my pregnancy. But I can’t imagine never interacting and responding because my blog for me is a social outlet and how I feel I make friends and connections with other readers. If I visit a blog enough times and they never respond to me and never visit me in return I assume they aren’t interested and thus I usually stop going to their blog.

Oh and I’m weird I like to read the comments on posts just as much as the post. Like Anya said, I like people to know when I respond hence why I also installed that reply notification email plugin so people know when someone comments on their comment lol.

I also have a reply notification plugin. I figure there are lots of people (like me!) who don’t always remember where they’ve commented. So getting an e-mail when there is a reply makes me happy, and I searched til I found one for my blog too. *grins*

I consider pregnancy a good reason for not getting to all comments. And visibly commenting on other blogs helps. I see you all over. *laughs* The bloggers that I came across that made me decide to make this post? I’ve never seen commenting on any of the blogs I’ve been to. Maybe they only comment on a few specific ones I haven’t found yet, but still. Made me not want to bother going back since they didn’t reply to any comments on their own blogs.

  12. Karen Blue

I try to always respond to comments. I also like to see who is commenting and check out their site and return the favor. I know most bloggers love comments, so I always try to leave one when I browse a site. I dislike when bloggers do not respond. It usually depends on the post. When I first started blogging, I didn’t always respond to comments so I can see why some don’t.

You’d think they’d at least respond to discussion post comments though. Or questions or something. But the ones I came across didn’t reply to anything. One blog I actually went back almost 2 months to see if maybe they used to reply and just had RL happen. But nothing. I don’t get that at all.
