This is not the post I had thought I’d be making on my birthday, but it also kind of fits.
We all know the old “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” But I’m sure we have also all done it at least once.
Last week, I went on a book buying spree (a little one!) because I finally got a full-time RL job again. Picked up a few books in series that I love, and then… This one cover caught my eye. I didn’t know anything about the book or the author (and silly me, didn’t get on my phone to check the reviews…) But the cover was so pretty! And the blurb on the back sounded interesting.
So I read the first 3 pages and it sounded like it might be good, even if the main character had a name that I just knew was going to annoy me. And then I went home and a few days later as I’m commenting on other people’s discussion posts, I noticed… That pretty book seemed to have a number of people who said they didn’t like it.
And now of course I’m afraid to start reading it. When I buy books online, I always check reviews first if I don’t know the author. But in bookstores I’m much less likely to do so. No idea why.
I’ve also come across books with absolutely horrible covers that have ended up being a really good read. Though in those cases, unless it’s an author I already like, I usually have to have a number of friends tell me to read it before I’ll buy and do so. Or it has to be free and I have to be in a “I’m bored, just grab something and read it!” mood.
So are you easily seduced by a pretty cover? Do you tend to check reviews when buying books in brick-and-mortar stores? How many times have you taken a book home based solely on the cover, and then discovered you should have bought something else?
