Buying Books Out Of Series Order

June 27, 2015 Discussions 0

I was straightening out my physical TBR shelf the other day. Finally got it down to 2 rows! Without any books sitting on top of them! (It used to be 3 rows deep, with books piled on top of the back 2 rows in stacks after I ran out of room…) Anyhow, so I was neatening the shelf, and I realized that 9 of the books were ones that were part of a series. And I don’t own the other books in the series!

So pretty much they’re not read yet because they’re book 2, or 3, or 4 in a series. And I own no other book in any of these 9 series. I hadn’t realized I had that many that I needed to get the first book in. I mean, I knew I had some, but 9? I’m not even sure how I managed that. I know a few were picked up at used bookstores over the years, and I didn’t realize they weren’t a first book or standalone until I got them home and went to read them. And then I’d see it said something about the prior book(s) inside the cover.

And one or two were gifted to me. I guess the gifters thought I had the first books? But the rest I have no idea how I managed to acquire them and not the earlier book(s).

So I was standing there and trying to decide what to do with them. I could go out and buy the first book, and then I’d have more books on my TBR shelf. I could decide not to read one or all and trade them in for other books. Or I could do what ended up happening on accident…

I got them all lined up neatly in a stack so I could tell those were the ones to be dealt with. And then I got distracted and wandered off not doing a single thing with any of them. *shakes her head* I’m pretty sure this is part of the reason I’ve had some of them so long. I tend to have a very short attention span when it comes to things I’m not ready to make a decision about. But I went back while writing this post and decided to keep 5 of them for sure and get the earlier book(s) in the series.

What about the rest of you? Do you pick up books (purposely or on accident) only to find out later that they’re in a series and you didn’t get book #1? What do you do when you realize that you have books that you need to get the earlier books in a series for? Have you ever held onto a book so long, that the first in the series is no longer in print?

And lastly, if any of you have read any of these books that I’m still debating about getting the first books in, let me know if they’re worth the read or if they should be traded in! *grins*

I have the Winter King’s War trilogy (books #2 & #3) The Sword of Calandra & The Mountains of Channadran by Susan Dexter.

And the Fern Capel trilogy (books #2 & #3) The Dragon Charmer & The Witch Queen by Jan Siegel.
