I really liked this book. It had all the earmarks of a good action fantasy. There was mystery and danger, fast-paced action as well as some sweet moments. The monsters were actually monsters, not just misunderstood. And while the good guys could be decent as humans, once they changed they were dangerous. The description of “The Devil” type of monster was both funny and scary. And I liked how Alex’s Dad was both protective of his daughter, and willing to get in the thick of things. Sweet Masterpiece (Samantha Sweet Mysteries #1) by Connie Shelton (review)

This is a quick read. The storyline is interesting, I like how the box ties into things. And Sam manages to figure out how to use the magic of the box fairly quickly, without letting herself depend on it too heavily. The information we learn about the painter is sad, but also a little sweet at the end bits. There is a lot of mention about Sam’s dream to own a bakery, and how she makes the cakes and other things for her customers.
