Do You Procrastinate Writing Your Blog Posts?

April 25, 2015 Discussions 8

I’ve been horrible lately. When I first started this blog 7 months ago, I had all kinds of posts scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance. I had reviews, discussions, daily book updates, etc.

But here lately? I’m not keeping up as well anymore. Part of that is that I now have a full-time job. I was jobless when this blog started, and for the first 3 months I had tons of time. I’m still doing fairly well with scheduling reviews in advance. Right now I have 2 weeks worth, with 2 extras later this summer (ARC reviews…)

But as much as I love my Fantasy Creature Friday posts that I came up with and started last November, sometimes I just keep putting it off. Yesterdays FCF I wrote up the night before it went live. Usually I try to do them earlier in the week, just to make sure I don’t forget or have something come up.

Discussions have also been a scramble some weeks. This one right here? It’s currently 10:45pm on friday, I just got off work and have to be back at work at 8am in the morning. But I realized I’d forgotten to come up with a topic when I was off on wednesday.

It’s not that I feel obligated or anything, I absolutely love hosting my FCFs! And seeing who I can stump that week, trying to pick a fantasy creature that people might not have heard about before and that should be in books. And I like doing discussions too.

I’ve just… been having a massive case of “I don’t want to do it right now. I’ll do it later.” And then either forgetting I haven’t actually done it yet, or realizing it’s the night before (or occasionally the day of!) and I haven’t gotten the post written much less scheduled.

Do you guys ever get that moment of “later, after I do…” with your blog? How do you make it go away? Or how do you manage to get yourself to actually stop putting things off and do them on time?

I procrastinate on EVERYTHING! So, I guess it’s no surprise that I usually write my blog posts the night before they go up or – more and more often lately – the day they go up. I have to get my posts up by about 11:00 so that they’ll make it in that day’s email, and I’m often cutting it very close to the wire! But I don’t mind – that’s me, and I’ve given up on trying to change. 🙂

*laughs* Glad I’m not the only one! Most of the reason I want to schedule ahead is because I’m a horribly forgetful person. The 2 weeks I didn’t post a FCF was only partly because I was busy. The rest was me going “ack! I forgot to write it up!” while I was at work on the fridays. *shakes her head* Maybe one day I’ll actually get more organized, but I’m not holding my breath.

*nods* I totally get that. I think my Fantasy Creature Fridays are my current favorite post-type I do, but they take me forever! Seems like they’re more work than the actual book reviews. Which is most likely why I procrastinate doing them so often!

I’m not sure to-do lists would help me much. I know I have to do it, I just tend to push it off for the fabled “later”.

One of my sites biggest draws is Tough Travels but it has at times felt like a burden. I simply MUST have it done by a specific day and that isn’t always convenient. I used to have the post written by Saturday, now I sometimes am struggling to get it up the day it hits.

And I get the change of job status. For two years I had a job where I did major reading during my shift because of the dead times. I got a promotion (yeah!) but that reading time is gone. I am reading at less than half the pace I was before, which leads to less reviews. Which has completely changed the pacing of my blog.

*nods* I’d have more issues with getting book reviews scheduled ahead of time, if my job didn’t allow me to read at work when it’s slow. So I’m definitely grateful for that. One of these days I may just sit down and schedule a bunch of Fantasy Creature Fridays (or discussions in general) all at once so I don’t have to worry about them. But somehow I’m thinking that may get put off too. *laughs*

I’m a huge procrastinator too, so feel your pain! I love it whenever I have a cushion of scheduled posts, but am horrible about keeping that cushion fluffed and wind up scrambling to write something the night before it’s due. Joining a challenge next month to stock up on scheduled posts, so hope that helps. Good luck!

Apparently there are a surprising number of procrastinating bloggers. Good to know I’m not alone! Good luck to you as well, thanks for stopping by.
