What is Fantasy Creature Friday? It’s a discussion where I will talk about a particular creature every week. And what book or book series I think of when that creature is mentioned. At the end of the post, you will also get to link up your own fantasy creature book reviews and discussions for others to wander through.
This weeks creature is the:
Banshees, also known as Bean Sidhe, are female spirits from Irish mythology. They are usually seen as a death omen. Banshees wail when someone is about to die. Accounts of Banshees go back as far as the year 1380. Some Banshees are tied to specific households, and only wail to warn that household of a family members death. Others have no ties and wail when near anyone who is about to die.
Legends say that Banshees have the gift of foresight. They would wail when a person from the family they were tied to died, no matter how many miles may lay between them. Other legends say the Banshee would appear before the death, and thus warn the family of the impending death by their wailing. If more than one Banshee appears, it indicated the death of someone great or holy. Still others say that Banshees are not fae at all, but ghosts of a woman murdered or who had died in childbirth.
They are frequently described as women with long pale hair, who dress in white or grey. Other stories say they dress in green, red, or black, and wear grey cloaks. Their appearance changes depending on what suits her at that moment. Often they appear as ugly or scary-looking hags, but they can also appear as a beautiful woman of any age.
I have read about Banshee in a few books, my favorite being the Soul Screamer series by Rachel Vincent.
Have you read any books with a Banshee in it? Had you heard of Banshees before? What is your favorite book or series with Banshees in them?
