What is Fantasy Creature Friday? It’s a discussion where I will talk about a particular creature every week. And what book or book series I think of when that creature is mentioned. At the end of the post, you will also get to link up your own fantasy creature book reviews and discussions for others to wander through.
This weeks creature is the:
Not to be mistaken for normal amphibians, Fire Salamanders are Elemental creatures with an affinity for fire. Usually seen covered in flames, they live in the heart of fires and are usually kept as pets or helpers of wizards.
Some accounts say they stay the same size as their normal-world bretherin. Others say that is their baby size, and they can grow to the size of a house. Fire Salamanders tend to be grumpy, and are only happy when burning things. They can form close bonds to those that care for them however, and are quick to defend them.
They are very hard to catch, only wizards with an affinity for fire can call them to themselves. Non-wizards would have to search the heart of a volcano or a forest fire. Fire Salamander skin is as hot as the hottest coals even without their protective covering of flames. Handling them is best done by those with magical protections or not at all.
I have read about Fire Salamanders in a number of books. Though as usual lately, the only ones I can think of currently are the Elemental Masters series by Mercedes Lackey.
Have you heard of Fire Salamanders before? What is your favorite book with a Fire Salamander in it?
