What is Fantasy Creature Friday? It’s a discussion where I will talk about a particular creature every week. And what book or book series I think of when that creature is mentioned. At the end of the post, you will also get to link up your own fantasy creature book reviews and discussions for others to wander through.
Thanks to Anya at On Star Ships And Dragon Wings for letting me borrow her ‘link your blog’ idea. She does a giveaway every Friday where you can win ARC’s and link up your reviews/discussions/giveaways. You should totally check it out after you’re done here!
So this week’s creature is the:
I encountered Gaki in the Diana Tregarde series by Mercedes Lackey. They feature heavily in book 2, Children of the Night.
Gaki are monsters out of Japanese legend. There are three main types: Those that consume blood, those that consume flesh, and those that consume the soul.
All three are deadly, and the one that this book deals with is the type that consumes souls. When feeding, the Gaki changes into a cloud-form. It looks like dark smoke, or dense fog, and surrounds its prey. They like to make the death as frightening, violent, and painful as they possibly can. Since it is akin to a demon, it doesn’t think the way humans do.
Gaki are usually solitary, but this one teams up with with psychic vampires. It can take the form of anyone it has killed, as well as gain their attributes, though seems to prefer Japanese bodies. They don’t need a partner to have children, once they feel safe and have enough food, they start having babies.
The only way to kill one, is when it’s in solid form. They are strong and fast like most stories of regular vampires. Sunlight does not hurt them. But what will kill a human will also kill a Gaki while wearing human form. Guns, daggers, get a deathblow in and the Gaki becomes smoke that fades away, dead and not to return.
Have you read any other books that have Gaki or similar demons in them?
