What is Fantasy Creature Friday? It’s a discussion where I will talk about a particular creature every week. And what book or book series I think of when that creature is mentioned. At the end of the post, you will also get to link up your own fantasy creature book reviews and discussions for others to wander through.
This weeks creature is the:
Gnomes are small creatures shaped like humans, that live underground. They are quite short, standing only 18 inches tall. They don’t like interacting with humans, and are said to be able to move through solid earth as easily as humans move through air.
Gnomes are not pretty like some versions of Elves and Fae are said to be. Nor are they hideous like goblins and trolls are said to be. But somewhere in between, with a tendency to lean more towards ugly than fair.
Some say they are great inventors, capable of making machines and devices beyond our imagination. Others say they are earth elementals, able to shape the earth itself and interested in guarding it’s treasures such as gold and jewels. Still others consider them no more than garden pests, on the same lines as ants or other unwanteds.
I have read about Gnomes in many different books, including: Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Dragonlance, Grimm Agency, the Rachel Morgan series and others.
Have you heard of Gnomes before? What is your favorite book with a Gnome in it?
