What is Fantasy Creature Friday? It’s a discussion where I will talk about a particular creature every week. And what book or book series I think of when that creature is mentioned. At the end of the post, you will also get to link up your own fantasy creature book reviews and discussions for others to wander through.
Thanks to Anya at On Star Ships And Dragon Wings for letting me borrow her ‘link your blog’ idea. She does a giveaway every Friday where you can win ARC’s and link up your reviews/discussions/giveaways. You should totally check it out after you’re done here!
This weeks creature is the:
The name Gremlin comes from the Old English word “gremian” which means “to vex.” They are well named as anything they can think of to do to cause trouble, they will do. In the World Wars, they were blamed for equipment failure.
They are believed to be between 12-20 inches tall. And are a cross between a jack-rabbit and a bull terrier in looks. Marine gremlins have webbed feet and fins. Most gremlins wear red and green clothing. They live in burrows under the ground, and have been known to drink gasoline (petrol) at airports and love to cause havoc on board airplanes. Their favorite pastime on planes, is to run back and forth from wing to wing until they have caused the crew to bail out.
Besides causing mischief at airfields, they love to play with anything electric. Shorting things out, making them suddenly stop working, or only work in fits and starts. If you have any kind of equipment failure, you can be sure a gremlin is to blame somewhere.
I have read about gremlins in numerous books, including the Mercy Thompson series, Spindle, and the 13 Treasures series.
Had you heard of Gremlins before? What is your favorite book with a gremlin in it?
