Fantasy Creature Friday – Hellhound!

June 5, 2015 Discussions 4

What is Fantasy Creature Friday? It’s a discussion where I will talk about a particular creature every week. And what book or book series I think of when that creature is mentioned. At the end of the post, you will also get to link up your own fantasy creature book reviews and discussions for others to wander through.

Thanks to Anya at On Star Ships And Dragon Wings for letting me borrow her ‘link your blog’ idea. She does a giveaway every Friday where you can win ARC’s and link up your reviews/discussions/giveaways. You should totally check it out after you’re done here!

This weeks creature is the:

Hellhound!

Hellhounds are larger than usual black dogs with glowing red eyes. They are extremely fast and strong, and have a foul stench. Some legends say that if you stare into a hellhounds eyes two or more times, you are fated to die. Others say that just hearing the howl of a hellhound can kill you all on its own.

Some hellhounds are said to have fire magic. They are often used to guard the entrances to the Underworld, as well as graveyards. Hellhounds are also used to hunt ghosts, and sometimes humans when they are used in the Wild Hunt.

I have read about hellhounds in a number of books, including Paladin, Hell Hounds Are For Suckers, The Vampire From Hell, Stone Maiden, and others.

Have you read about hellhounds before? What is your favorite book with a hellhound in it?

I have once read a series that had shapeshifting Hellhounds. They were fast and strong there as well, they were supposed to be evil, but some weren’t and managed to control it in a good way. I eventually stopped the series and didn’t finish it as I lost interest when one of the later books took a twist I didn’t like. I vaguely remember a few other series have hellhounds or similiar creatures.

I hate it when a series I like or love, does something that turns me off enough to stop reading it. Sorry that happened to you!
