Fantasy Creature Friday – Medusa!

October 16, 2015 Discussions 2

What is Fantasy Creature Friday? It’s a discussion where I will talk about a particular creature every week. And what book or book series I think of when that creature is mentioned. At the end of the post, you will also get to link up your own fantasy creature book reviews and discussions for others to wander through.

This weeks creature is:

Medusa is a monster, one of three Gorgon, and described as having the face of a human woman with living venomous snakes instead of hair. Her face was said to be so ugly in appearance, looking upon it would turn you into stone. Other accounts say she was so beautiful that the God Poseidon raped her in Athena’s temple. This enraged Athena, and thus she cursed Medusa to be ugly and have snakes for hair, so that no man would ever again want her.

Medusa was the only one of her sisters who was mortal. Perseus cut off her head, aided by items given to him from Athena, Hermes, Hephaestus and Hades. Her head retained it’s powers after her death, and was said to eventually become part of Athena’s Shield.

I have read of Medusa in the following books: the Xanth series by Piers Anthony, Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan.

Have you heard of Medusa before? What is your favorite book with Medusa in it?
