Fantasy Creature Friday – Shapeshifters!

July 17, 2015 Discussions 4

What is Fantasy Creature Friday? It’s a discussion where I will talk about a particular creature every week. And what book or book series I think of when that creature is mentioned. At the end of the post, you will also get to link up your own fantasy creature book reviews and discussions for others to wander through.

Thanks to Anya at On Star Ships And Dragon Wings for letting me borrow her ‘link your blog’ idea. She does a giveaway every Friday where you can win ARC’s and link up your reviews/discussions/giveaways. You should totally check it out after you’re done here!

This weeks creature is the:

Shapeshifter!

Shapeshifters come in many varieties. Some are witches or other magic users, that cast spells to change their forms. Some of this variety use dark spells to steal the shape of animals and humans, some use spells that are neither dark nor light and simply use the magic within themselves or the ambient magic of the world around them to shift their forms.

Others are born with the talent. They may have other magics as well, but shapeshifting is their primary. In almost all cases, these shapeshifters are able to transform into animals or take on the guise of a human. Some can shift bits of themselves, such as eyes or other facial features. Some can shift genders as well. Others still are limited in how many forms they can take. Some can only take on one other form, some can take on thousands of others.

The most well-known type of shapeshifter is of course the werewolf. Were-creatures turn into their animal form at the full moon. More powerful ones can shift their shape any time of the month. Were-creatures can be a victim of a curse, an infected bite from another were-creature, or they can be born with the ability.

I have read about shapeshifters in numerous books. Some of which include: Masques, Harry Potter, Mercy Thompson, Anita Blake, 13 Treasures, Accidentally Wolf and others.

Had you heard of shapeshifters other than were-creatures before? What is your favorite book with a shapeshifter in it (regardless of type)?

Shapeshifters are on of my favourite supernatural creatures. one of my favourite shapeshifter series is Kelley Armstrong her Otherworld series, but I’ve read lots of other book with them as well. I especially like the shapeshifting type where they actually change into an animal and it takes some time and pain to shfit, as opposed to the type of shifting where they can wear clothes and shitf and when they shift back still have their clothes on and such, with the whole alternate dimension explanation. As I don’t like that explanation for it. I also prefer the shift as will as opposed to the moon only change.
I have mostly read werewolf books so far, but would love to read books about some more unusual animals as well.

I haven’t read that series, I’ll have to add it to my list!

I like the books where it isn’t instantaneous changing when the shapeshifter is something like a werewolf (or other were-creature.) But I don’t mind the ones where it seems to happen in a snap if they aren’t were-creatures. My favorite were-creatures are wereleopards, but I also like werewolves and other shifters.
