I’m starting a new weekly discussion post today. Some of you may be disappointed because I will no longer be posting the “newly published” book days that were requested. But I was taking too many of them home with me! As well as how long it took me to write up those posts.
So! What is Fantasy Creature Friday? It’s a discussion where I will talk about a particular creature every week. And what book or book series I think of when that creature is mentioned. At the end of the post, you will also get to link up your own fantasy creature book reviews and discussions for others to wander through.
Thanks to Anya at On Star Ships And Dragon Wings for letting me borrow her ‘link your blog’ idea. She does a giveaway every Friday where you can win ARC’s and link up your reviews/discussions/giveaways. You should totally check it out after you’re done here!
And now that all that babbling is done, what is today’s creature? Considering my love and addiction (not to mention my name!) it could be nothing other than…
I don’t remember for sure what the first book was that I read that had dragons in it. But if I had to take a guess, I would have to pick Dragonlance. Which is a series not a single book, but I totally love it! And the dragons in these books are awesome! They’re split between Good and Evil. There are Chromatic Dragons which are evil and follow the Goddess Queen Takhisis, and Metallic Dragons which are good and follow the God Paladine and the Gods of Good in general.
Chromatic Dragons come in 5 colors: Red, White, Green, Black and Blue. And each have different powers, personalities, sizes and places they live.
Black dragons are the most selfish, they think only of what they have to gain by doing anything, and consider all other creatures beneath them. They are not only evil, but tricky, and if they can find a loophole in any contract they will. They serve Takhisis out of fear, are very good at wielding magic, especially deceptive magic. Their breath weapon is acid. They remind me of Slytherins in Harry Potter in some ways, the evil Slytherins that is.
Blue dragons are the charming ones. They get along very well with mankind, are fearless and honorable. Often chosen as mounts by those who lead Takhisis’ armies, and serve her out of respect. Their breath weapon is lightning. Kitiara, the female Dragon HighLord rides Skie.
Green dragons are hot tempered and cruel. They rarely fight, preferring to use their magic to trap their enemies and then torture them. They hate elves above all others, and their breath weapon is chlorine gas.
Red dragons are the largest and most feared. Takhisis favors them and they revere her. They are highly intelligent and very good at battle tactics. They are as cruel as the Green dragons, and have the only unmagical breath weapon: traditional dragonflame.
White dragons are rare and less intelligent than the rest. They cannot live outside of cold climes as the warmth will kill them. They are no good at magic and their breath weapon is ice.
Metallic Dragons also come in 5 colors, to keep the balance and oppose the Chromatic Dragons.
Brass dragons are the loud, boisterous gossips. They’ll talk to anyone about anything, and have even been known to stop in the middle of a battle to talk to their opponents. They tend to fight blue dragons.
Bronze dragons love animals and will protect any living creature that needs it. They do not like hunters, trappers or poachers because of them killing animals. They enjoy battle, and study warfare and tactics.
Copper dragons are the jokesters. They like pulling practical jokes and making minor mischief. They like to taunt their foes, which are usually red dragons. They will aid those who need it, but charge for their help.
Gold dragons are considered the most wise and beautiful of all. They dislike killing and will only do so if provoked.
Silver dragons are most often friends with humans. Their magic allows them to change their shape for long periods of time. Many have been known to live as humans or elves for years. They work well with riders, listening and taking directions from them, and will fight against evil wherever it appears. They have also been known to fall in love with humans and elves.
They way the dragons are described in the books has always been intriguing. Most books I have read since don’t seem to go into as much detail. I mean, like the White dragons who can only live in cold regions and die in warm ones. Or the green dragons who prefer to live in swamps. Even the shapes and sizes of the dragons are different from each other, making different species more realistic.
Silvers have always been my favorite of course, especially Silvara, but I enjoy reading about them all. Blue Skie is my favorite of the evil dragons, and that may be because he appears in more books than any other evil dragon. But all the dragons are well thought out and believable for their world.
I could go on for pages and pages. *laughs* But I’ll stop here and just say that if you haven’t read any of the Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman, you need to! Start with Dragons of Autumn Twilight. Which dragon is your favorite? Or which color if you don’t have a favorite dragon?
