So mostly I root for the good guys/girls to win in books. I’m sure most of us do. But have you ever read a book where you made a better connection with, or just liked the bad guy/girl more? And so wanted them to come out on top?
I don’t mean a book about an evil character where you’re supposed to be rooting for them. (So not like Maleficent in her movie.) But a book where you’re reading, and you know the main good character is going to win. But you can’t help hoping that they actually lose and the evil character wins.
Or maybe it’s not even the main evil character. But one of the minions or lesser evils in the book. You want the good guys/girls to win, and the main evil to be defeated. But the lesser evil calls to you and you want them to get away unscathed, or with some minor win and escape.
I was trying to remember a book the other day. I can’t actually remember anything about it except that however long ago I read it, I wanted the bad guy to win. I didn’t hate the main good person character, I just really really wanted the bad guy to win. (And don’t you just hate when you can’t remember a book name/plot for the life of you??)
And it struck me as odd. Remembering that for at least one book, I had wished for something so crazy. So I started thinking about other books I’ve read, and tried to figure out if I’d had that wish more than once. I can only remember one other book/series where that happened. And then it was a more minor evil.
Something about The Traveler in the Anita Blake books made me want him to win, just a little bit. Not enough to endanger any of my favorite characters in that series. But I liked him and didn’t want him destroyed or diminished. I’m still not even sure what it was that I liked so much when he was first introduced.
But since it’s happened to me at least twice, one major and one minor evil, I thought I would poke you lovely people to see what books YOU felt that way about. Have you ever loved a bad character so much you wanted them to win over the good main character? What book was it? Do you know WHY you wanted them to win? Did they manage to come out on top at all, even in a more minor way?
