How Often Do You Answer Comments?

May 21, 2016 Discussions 12

When I first started my blog (almost 2 years ago now! Time has flown by!) I tried to answer comments the same day they were made. It helped that I was only getting a few here and there, so it was easy to do that.

Then when I started getting busier at work, and had more comments coming in, I tried to answer them every few days. Lately I’ve been doing it on weekends, so it’s more like once a week. (And occasionally once every 10-14 days! Which is terrible. Or at least, I feel bad when it takes that long to reply to people!)

Summer is the busy time at my work, so I know I won’t get back to same-day replies like at the beginning. I’m really trying for the ‘every weekend catch up on comments’ thing though. Comments Not Replied To is a lifesaver in that respect. I don’t have to wade through and see which comments I’ve already responded to, it just lists all the ones I need to deal with in one tab.

So how often do you reply to comments on your blog? Every day? Every week? Once a month? Never? Do you use Comments Not Replied to? If not, how do you keep track of which comments you need to get back to?

I was exactly the same and used to reply the same day when I started blogging. These days, seen as I get more (and have no wifi at home) it is more like once a week for me too. I always feel like I take too long but it is pretty tough keeping on top of them, and taking the time to comment on other people’s blogs too. Great topic! 🙂

I’ve totally fallen behind on commenting on other blogs! I’m slowly going through my inbox and reading/commenting on posts from the last 2 weeks from the blogs I follow by e-mail. But I’ve just been really ‘meh’ lately about catching up on everything. I blame the dentist entirely. *laughs* I have to have 3 wisdom teeth out this coming week and dentists scare me enough I’m getting knocked out for it.

I can’t imagine how the bigger blogs manage to keep up with all the comments on their own blog, and comment on other blogs too. Life goals for another time? *grins*

Any commenting counts. *nods* I don’t tend to respond to 2-word comments, or ones that just seem like flyby trying to comment so they can leave a link to their own blogs. But if they take the time to leave an actual comment, I try to come up with something to say back. Even if it’s just “thank you!”.

Especially if it’s a newer blogger, or someone who hasn’t commented on my blog before. I remember how happy it made me to see that my comments got responded to when I was first starting.

Unfortunately, it’s a self-hosted WordPress plugin that I use. But I’m sure there has to be something similar for blogspot. *crosses her fingers for you* I don’t remember who recommended it to me, but it has been SO USEFUL. Especially when a comment gets lost, and I can just quickly scroll through the “missing reply” tab and see that it was made x-days ago and reply from there.

Current favorite plugin of ever. *nods* I adore the “missing reply” tab. I’ve caught comments that way that got lost in the shuffle of replying to other comments. And ones I’ve sworn I replied to, but apparently never actually did.

When I first started blogging, I did pretty much the same thing – or at the very latest, I’d reply the next day. Now I usually try for two or three times a week, but more often than not, that turns into once a week. Sometimes my replies aren’t the most in depth, but usually that’s directly related to the comments I get. When I just get a simple sentence comment, I’ll drop a ‘thank you’ to let the person know I appreciate the comment.

The way I’ve got my blog set up, I get notified by e-mail whenever someone comments. To remind myself which comments I have to reply to, I don’t delete them from my inbox until I do reply. This also has the added benefit of making me feel incredibly guilty whenever I check my e-mail and find a reminder that I still haven’t replied to that comment I got almost a week ago. 😉

*nods* For short comments that I can’t really say much about, I do the “thank you!” route as well.

I also get e-mails when someone comments on my blog. But I don’t keep them after reading the comment. I get so many e-mails a day, (seriously, I get anywhere from 20-50 a day!) that if I kept all the comments as well I would go more insane than my normal. I also find that the longer a message sits in my inbox, the more likely I am to want to just delete it instead of reading it. Just to clear out some of the space. (I try to only do that with ones I don’t need to actually respond to, or review notices posted by blogs I follow though…) But that’s awesome that the guilt trip works for you! *laughs*

I reply to every comment as long as it was more than 2 words long. It’s just a matter of how long it takes me to do so! *laughs*
