People Who Flame You For Your Opinion

November 12, 2016 Discussions 10

I suppose that I’ve been lucky in that this is a first for me after over 2 years of book blogging. But I had someone attack me for my opinion of a book that I reviewed on Amazon. I get not having the same opinion of a book, because not everyone likes the same stuff. But to go off on a screaming rant about half of a sentence in my review?

And it totally was a rant, bashing the characters and spewing hate all over the place. I’ve never seen so many down votes on one of my reviews in less than 24 hours either. So I can only imagine that the commentor had all their friends go after my review as well.

It strikes me as super petty and childish, especially as they appear to be a Vine Voice. I don’t know a lot about that program, but I would have expected better from someone who was invited to join it.

I haven’t seen this happen on GoodReads, but I don’t usually read the comments on reviews there, just the reviews themselves. I suppose I should be glad that it’s only that one review (at least at the time of me writing this!) and hasn’t spread to more of them. But it still makes me a bit leery about posting any reviews to Amazon now, even though the publishers like us to cross-post them.

Has this happened to you? Have you seen this other places besides Amazon, or is it mostly an Amazon-thing? What do you think when you see a review with tons of down votes?

I’m sorry that happened to you. 🙁 *hugs* It’s definitely an Amazon thing. I’ve written reviews on Goodreads, because it seems nicer over there (although I have heard stories about bullying on that site too, but I don’t think it’s as bad). Even though I know it’s helpful for authors to get Amazon reviews, I’m too chicken to risk it. Oh, and I don’t pay attention to the “down votes” on reviews. I’m more interested in the content of the review.

Good to know you don’t pay attention to the number of down votes. I’m just glad it seems to only have happened to one review, and after looking at the person’s reviews it seems they just hate that particular author. Though it does make me wonder why if they hate the author so much, they keep reading the books! *laughs*

You know to be honest I don’t post reviews to Amazon because I’ve seen so much crap over there that I don’t bother. If someone attacked my review I would want to respond and I just don’t need the aggravation. I sympathize though and don’t let it get to you- there’s just books and we all have opinions and if someone can’t politely disagree or comment, they ‘re an idiot. lol

I’ve decided not to respond to it at all. I haven’t been able to think of a polite way to respond, or one that wouldn’t get me in trouble. So I’m just ignoring it! It seems to just be that particular author they hate, as none of my other reviews have been hit. So at least that’s a good thing!

I have only had this happen a handful of times, BUT I know people who have it happen to them ALLL the time. Which is ridiculous, of course. How can you even say someone’s opinion is “wrong”? I have had it happen on Goodreads as well as Amazon, though I have heard of a lot of shady business with authors downvoting any reviews under 3 (and often even under 4) stars. So I don’t bother that much with Amazon, unless I really loved the book and want to see it do well. (Or I guess if I REALLY hated the book and want no one to buy it ever? That hasn’t happened yet hahah) Oh, and it IS totally childish. Like, who even has time for such nonsense!? Sorry that happened to you!

*laughs* There have been a few books I hated, and for whatever reason, the really low star reviews tend to get a lot more traffic than the high or middle of the road.

I pretty much only post ARC reviews to Amazon. Everything goes to GoodReads and my website, but I only bother with Amazon for ARCs. I’m not even going to respond to the comment on that review. Can’t think of a way to politely word anything I might say, and honestly reading it makes me think of a rabid dog foaming at the mouth. With how much they seem to hate the author and series, I’m actually a bit surprised they’re still reading the series at all! *lol*

I am sorry to hear this happened to you, I just can’t understand why people can’t be civilized about this. Discussion is okay, but being bashing and hurtful isn’t. And that’s nasty you got so many downvotes on your review :(.

I’ve seen some nasty comments on goodreads and amazon reviews, but so far not on my own reviews far as I can remember. The last weird comment I remember getting was from someone who didn’t get why I didn’t rate a book 5 stars instead of 4 star and thought I should’ve rated it 5 stars. I just ignored that one.

*laughs* Because 1 star difference is so hugely important!

Yeah, I’ve opted to ignore the comment entirely. Can’t think of a single thing to say that would be even halfway polite. And reading some of their other reviews for the same author, they come out as bat-shit crazy. I mean, if you hate an author that much why are you still reading the series??

    • SilvaraWilde

It’s actually making me laugh now. Since it’s just the one review of mine, and it’s obvious the person just hates the author with a crazy passion. Really makes me wonder why they’re still reading the series/author when they hate it that much! *laughs*

But it was a total shock when it first happened. I was like, “but that has nothing to do with my review…??”
