Exquisite Captive (Dark Caravan Cycle #1) by Heather Demetrios (review)

Exquisite Captive (Dark Caravan Cycle #1) by Heather Demetrios (review)

This is and is not, a love triangle. In one sense it is, because two men are after the same woman (Nalia). But it also isn’t, because Nalia only loves one of them. And it isn’t her abusive master. She’s a little confused at first, because she was taken into slavery as a 15 year old who had never loved or had a relationship before. But mostly she hates Malek. And with good reason. I liked how strong Nalia was. She lived years in captivity with an abusive owner, forced to grant wishes for his business contacts. Otherwise she was… Read more »

The School for Good and Evil (The School for Good and Evil #1) by Soman Chainani (review)

The School for Good and Evil (The School for Good and Evil #1) by Soman Chainani (review)

“Only once you destroy who you think you are can you embrace who you truly are”   I really liked Sophie for most of the book, but as we get to know Agatha better, she slowly started making me root for her. All the characters were fun and interesting to read about. I liked Hestia and Dot best of the secondary characters. And the illustrations that were all throughout the book were wonderful! This is a middle grade book, but it does have a bit of darkness to it. There are also a lot of Good = beautiful, and Evil… Read more »

The Reptile Room (A Series of Unfortunate Events #2) by Lemony Snicket (review)

The Reptile Room (A Series of Unfortunate Events #2) by Lemony Snicket (review)

This book was a fast and fun read. It’s full of humor, as well as that slightly twisted vibe. The author has a running commentary throughout the book that explains things from what a word one of the characters uses, to things the author is up to at the time he is writing a scene. I loved the Incredible Deadly Viper. Uncle Monty was a fun and interesting character. Violet is my favorite of the siblings. You know nothing good is ever going to last in the books, but the ways in which the unfortunate events happen is usually fairly… Read more »

The Elite (The Selection #2) by Kiera Cass (review)

The Elite (The Selection #2) by Kiera Cass (review)

A family member gave me this as a gift since I said I’d read the first one. I was really hoping it would be better than book 1, despite some of the comments I got on that review! Marlee had something horrific happen to her early on in this book because she was in love with someone other than the Prince. And despite seeing it happen with her own eyes, America still has these little ‘dates’ with Aspen with no thought about what could happen to her if they’re caught! She’s finally decided she wants to marry the Prince. And… Read more »

The Selection (The Selection #1) by Kiera Cass (review)

The Selection (The Selection #1) by Kiera Cass (review)

So there are a number of weird names in this book. I knew from reading the synopsis that the name of the main character would bug me. But the premise sounded like it might be a fun read, so I picked it up anyway. Some names are okay, or just twists on more normal names. But seriously… America Singer? Tiny? Tuesday? Aspen is borderline, I’ve read it before as a girls name but not a boy. The palace is constantly under attack by two different rebel factions. And not one person seems to have any idea why they’re being attacked!… Read more »
