Do You Have More Self-Bought Or Review Books On Your Physical TBR?

July 9, 2016 Discussions 18

My physical TBR shelf has grown into 2 shelves. I know, I know. I need to get reading! *laughs* But there’s less time during the summer for me to read. And since I’m on a few different publisher mailing lists, my TBR keeps growing. (Well, that and the fact I keep requesting books from the library instead of reading what I already have… oops!)

I used to have way more books that I bought or was given by family, on my TBR than anything else. But now that I’m up to two shelves, I’m not so sure what I have more of. I have a few books I’ve won due to giveaways; the books I get sent every month from Berkley; a few other publisher sent books; and then of course my purchased or family gifted books.

At current count I have:

41 cozy mysteries from Berkley! *had NO IDEA I had that many set aside*
7 fantasy and sci-fi books I’ve won from giveaways or been sent unsolicited for review
37 books I’ve either purchased or were given by my family

For a total of 85 books on my physical TBR shelves! *isn’t EVEN going to worry about what’s on her Kindle*

So apparently I have less books I’ve bought myself or been gifted by family, than anything else in my TBR. I thought it was the other way around, but those cozy mystery shipments add up every month. If I ever catch up on my reading, I may have to start posting 2 cozy mystery reviews a week instead of just one.

I like reading on my Kindle at work since it’s easier to set aside when the phone rings. But I’ll have to try taking physical books with me now too, just to get some of this pile down a bit.

What about you? How much of your physical TBR shelves are books you’ve bought or were given by family? How much were sent by publishers or won in giveaways? Now that you’ve looked, are you going to work on one set or another more than you had been? Was it as big a surprise to you, which set you had more of?

I don’t review ARCs or review copies, so my TBR pile is just made up of books I’ve bought. I just seem to keep buying more though and I still have so many to read! I don’t know the exact number because I keep finding more books stashed away that I had forgotten about, but I can tell you there’s a lot of them! 🙂

I never used to count how many books I had. But then I realized my TBR had doubled and I was hoping counting them would make me start reading more of them. It hasn’t really… *laughs* One day? Probably this fall when I actually have time again?

I’m currently on a book buying ban, but it hasn’t helped at all with me requesting books from the library.

I have more ARCs than anything on my the. But that is only because of BEA. I don’t get book gifts, surprisingly. I think my family knows if I want it I will buy it myself.
I find it is much easier for me to read an ebook, so that’s unfortunate.
Hey, ARC August by Read.Sleep.Repeat is coming up. I to get a lot of books read from the TBR pile for August.

I get a few books every Christmas/birthday. But mostly my family has stopped gifting me books, since they know I get so many for my blog.

It’s easier for me to read ebooks too. Mostly because I can take my Kindle to work and read it during slow moments. Much easier to put the Kindle aside and answer the phone or put in a fax. Physical books you have to grab a bookmark, put it in the book, then put down the book and do whatever. But I’m probably going to have to start taking a physical book to work in order to catch up a little!

I am too lazy to count, but I can tell you that my personal library is full with books I bought or was gifted with.
I’ve been playing (and winning) more giveaways, but when I see the amout of those and books I got for review and when I see books that I purchased, it sth like 1:6.
The thing is, I started collecting books years before I started blogging/entering giveaways.

I’ve always been a bookworm. I’d bring books to school with me to read during lunch or after my work was done in class. Pretty much started that in 3rd grade if not sooner. Did it all through high school too. So my collection of books is… huge. *laughs* But my “haven’t read yet” pile has grown immensely since starting my blog. In part, because of all the books I see my blog-friends reading and that sound good so I have to get them too!

Besides the cost of going, the fear of how many books I’d bring back home is the major reason I haven’t gone to BEA or RT. It would be fun to meet up with blog-friends in person, but my TBR is so big already I’d feel bad grabbing more books that I don’t know when I’d get around to reading!

I was hoping to do that this summer, but I forgot how busy we get at work. So less reading time. And I keep receiving ARCs that look so good… *laughs* Self-control problems, who me? *looks at the stack of pretty books that just recently arrived, drops a sheet over them*

I’m super picky about 2nd hand books. I’ll still buy them, but they have to look new. Or at least be really clean, with no visible suspect stains or ripped pages or damaged covers. Dog eared pages make me sad too. *laughs* I can be a total book snob, but on the other hand, I try to keep my own books in as good shape as possible too…

Go you for clearing out your TBR! I keep saying it’ll happen one day for me, and then I go get the mail and find more books… *laughs*

My review TBR and bought TBR and pretty equivalent, though my bought TBR a little bit higher. Looking at my bookshelves, I’m actually surprised by how many review books I have! In addition, I have a lot of ARCs but not a lot of review books if that makes sense. Some are ones I acquire through giveaways, books for trade, and just gifts.

That makes total sense. I have a few ARCs, but mostly I try to pass them along if I wasn’t totally in love with the book. I have so many books now that I try not to hang onto anything that was below a 4 star for me. And even those I’m pickier about keeping!

My review TBR keeps growing. I can’t wait for summer to be over and fall to start so I have time to read and blog and all the things again. (And yes, I know how strange that sounds to want summer to be over! *lol* But it’s my busy season and I fall so far behind it’s not even funny!)

    • SilvaraWilde

Go you! My TBR is so bad currently because summer is my busy season. I fall so behind on everything June – August or so! Though honestly, it would still be fairly large even in the off season, it just wouldn’t be quite this large!

This is such an interesting discussion! I personally think my TBR is more of books that are super hyped or anything that really interests me. I remember than when I first created a GR account, I added EVERYTHING to my TBR, which consisted of books that I had merely heard of. Now, a lot of the books I have on my TBR are books that I have ARCs or finished copies of, stuff that I’ve bought myself or chosen to read. Great discussion!

I don’t like how on GoodReads all my unread owned books and “want to read” books end up in the same To Be Read shelf. It gets confusing with the books I only have ebook copies of, and is one reason I avoid thinking about how many books are in my Kindle archives!

When I think of my TBR piles, I only consider books to be in the pile if I actually own a copy (or have borrowed it from a friend or the library.) Otherwise I consider them on my “to buy or borrow” lists instead.

GoodReads is such a rabbit hole for me, that I have to separate my thoughts on a TBR that way or everything would end up there! *lol*
