Curse on the Land (Soulwood #2) by Faith Hunter (review)

Curse on the Land (Soulwood #2) by Faith Hunter (review)

This series just keeps getting better and better. Nell is still finding clues and putting things together in ways her team hasn’t. But they found a lot of things on their own as well. And it fits better in this book, the way she puts things together. It didn’t feel nearly as Mary Sue-ish this time around. She’s now getting schooling to become a full member of the team, and her powers keep growing and changing in interesting ways. Tandy’s powers also got a temporary boost and twist during the book. And he is a lot more sure of himself,… Read more »

Crimson Death (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #25) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

Crimson Death (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #25) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

Like the last book, Anita is finally getting back into police work and crime scene investigation more. There is still sex in the book, at least 3 different scenes (I didn’t count, but there were that many minimum.) Which when compared to the length of the book, and the amount of time spent on other things? Not really an issue for me. There are also a number of gory or gross things mentioned in the book. But if you’ve read the early books in the series, it won’t bother you much as the scenes are less bad than some of… Read more »

Blood of the Earth (Soulwood #1) by Faith Hunter (review)

Blood of the Earth (Soulwood #1) by Faith Hunter (review)

Having not read any books by this author before, I wasn’t sure if I’d be confused reading a spin off series. But it wasn’t confusing at all. In fact, I didn’t want to put it down until I had finished it! The magic and creatures aren’t quite like I’ve met before. There are wereleopards and vampires, but they have their own unique spin. I really like how Tandy’s empathy was done. It was believable, and as much a weakness as it was a strength. I loved how Soulwood was almost sentient but not quite. The way it and Nell worked… Read more »

Dead Ice (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #24) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

Dead Ice (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #24) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

I’ve been hoping for years now that Anita would go back to the crime scene work like in the early books. I really enjoyed reading about how she figured out who the killer or bad person was. All the information about police work and using her zombie raising power and other abilities. This book? Started out with her doing that, in the form of her U.S. Marshall duties. There is a squick factor in that the crime she is investigating has to do with zombie porn. (Yes, you read that right.) But no explicit details are given. And there is… Read more »

Jason (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #23) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

Jason (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #23) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

This book is pretty much entirely sex, and working on issues. Anita’s issues, Jade’s issues, J. J.’s issues. The first 66 pages are one long scene in Anita’s kitchen where she, a few of her guys, and Envy talk about pain in the bedroom and why they like or dislike it. And talk Anita into having sex with Jason while J. J. watches so she can understand why Jason might like it rougher sometimes. There was none of the police crime stuff, vampire hunting (no vampires at all in this book actually), mystery or anything else that is part of… Read more »

Affliction (Anita Blake #22) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

Affliction (Anita Blake #22) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book, based on the summary. I like Micah well enough, but it sounded like the whole 600-page book would be based around his dying father. It was, and it also wasn’t. I was really enjoying it, there’s lots of police work and crime detection like in the early books most of us loved before the series started going down hill. There were only 2 sex scenes in the entire book. And 2 of my favorite characters who we don’t see enough of made appearances: Wicked and Truth. But Anita kept… Read more »

Kiss The Dead (Anita Blake #21) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

Kiss The Dead (Anita Blake #21) by Laurell K. Hamilton (review)

This is one of those series that’s kind of like a train wreck. You don’t really want to keep reading it, but at the same time, you can’t really help yourself. The series was GOOD in the beginning, I adored the characters and the plot, even the crime-scene stuff was good. And then somewhere around book 7-8? All this sex started being added for what seemed silly reasons. The series turned into a smut-fest. But I still really had some characters I loved, and I had to know what was going on with them. So I started picking up the… Read more »
