What Crafty Things Do You Do?

May 23, 2015 Discussions 8

My basket of ‘to be used’ yarn has reached crazy proportions, so I’ve been trying to use some of it up this past week. Mostly so I don’t feel too guilty buying more! So this past week I’ve been doing a lot of crocheting. You may have seen some of these pictures on my InstaGram already. I made 2 twirl scarves for my co-workers, and started on a blanket for myself. The blue scarf was 6 feet long and 4 inches thick, I used 2 skeins of yarn on it. The white and black scarf was just under 5 feet long and almost 3 inches thick. I used a little over 1 skein on it.

The blanket I’m making for myself is currently 5 feet long and 4 inches wide. It might end up being a throw instead of a full blanket. Pretty sure I didn’t make it quite long enough, but I’m loving the colors in this variegated yarn! The 2nd picture is the actual shade of the yarn, not sure why the first picture ended up such a vivid blue.

Besides those, I also paint ceramics. Though I haven’t worked on any in months. I need to get a table and an area to work on them again. Currently I have 3 large mermaids, 2 large angels, 2 medium sized unicorns, 3 small angels, and a host of other small things (animals, nativities, etc.) that need to be painted and then covered in clear varnish to seal them.

My crafting urges seem to come in spurts. I’ll want to do nothing but paint for a few weeks, and so get lots of figurines done. And then I won’t want to do any for ages. Same thing with the crochet, this is the first time this year that I’ve had the time and inclination to make anything with all the yarn I have stockpiled. Though usually I don’t go this long between having a project!

What kinds of crafty things do you all do? And where do you get your supplies?

I’ve heard of etching glasses, but not painting them. I’m guessing it’s something like painting plates only with wine glasses? Sounds neat!

I actually have the master bedroom of my condo set up as a craft room and I sleep in the slightly smaller room. I used to craft all the time, scrapbooking, card making, jewelry, cross stitching. Unfortunately, I have developed really bad eye sight and shaky hands, so I feel like I can’t meet my own standards of quality, but I am thinking about going back to making my Christmas cards by hand. Family and friends don’t seem to notice the little errors that I do!

I did cross-stitch in high school, but dropped it after a year or so. It took me way too long to see visible results for the amount of time I put into it.

The Christmas cards sound like fun! And it’s totally true, no one ever sees as many flaws as we do ourselves. I’m super-critical of my ceramic painting. I use a detail brush for everything, which makes it take lots longer. And Dad just shakes his head at me, but has given up suggesting I use a larger brush.

I never got into scrapbooking, there’s this huge section for it in most craft stores. But somehow I never got sucked into it. I’m honestly not even sure what all you DO… *laughs* But I’m sorry to hear you don’t have time for it anymore.
